Frequently Asked Questions
Products in general
We work with 925 Sterling Silver either gold plated, as pure silver, covered with enamel, pearls or other stones or with ruthenium plating. In some of our designs we also use brass as a base with for instance silver or gold-platings. Many of our designs consists of a range of various materials in one single jewellery. You can always read about the materials used on each jewellery in the description text. It is important to have in mind that general wear and tear causes a certain lifespan in relation to both the gold and the ruthenium platings. This is normal and it is not considered a legitimate reason to complain.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to predict how long the plating will last – it is determined by various factors; pH of your skin, exposure to chemicals (perfume, hair spray, nail polish, soap etc.), grease, high temperatures, amount of sweat and general use. You can always go to your local goldsmith and get your jewelry re-plated.
Generally speaking, sterling silver consists of 1000 parts of silver. This is too soft for jewellery making and therefore 75 parts are added, which can be copper, zinc or other parts without nickel. Most people use copper to alloy the fine silver, just like us.
That is: 925 parts silver and 75 parts copper. This is generally the recipe for sterling silver.
Our sterling silver and gilding (18K) are regularly tested by the Danish Precious Metals Control. At LULU we only have good reports, which are documented online and can be found at the precious metal control. Sterling silver is soft and this can be an advantage as you can gently straighten a piece of jewelry that has been slightly bent in use.
There is a tiny % of the population that cannot tolerate sterling silver. People who are highly allergic to nickel may react to the small amount of copper in sterling silver, as these people often have reactions to many different types of metal once they have become allergic to nickel - even silver and gold. But most people with nickel allergies can tolerate sterling silver.
Our brass consists mainly of copper, and is a very stable material that binds gilding very well. So far, all our brass is 50% recycled material. As more resource-friendly methods of purifying used brass and precious metals in general are continually invented, we will move more and more towards using this. All our brass is tested and we have never had any cases of nickel or other allergic reactions due to a product from LULU.
All jewelry from LULU Copenhagen is 100% nickel-free and therefore skin-friendly for anyone who can tolerate sterling silver and copper.
